The First TWICF Festival – The Cello in its Quintessence

The cello, often considered the instrument closest to the human voice, takes center stage this year in Taiwan with an international event entirely dedicated to this beloved and fascinating instrument.

Organized by the "Swiss Music Night", the First "Taiwan International Cello Music Festival" (TWICF) 2024 will take place in October in Taipei and Kaohsiung. Renowned European cellists such as Jens-Peter Maintz from Germany, Christian Poltéra from Switzerland, and celebrated German jazz cellist Stephan Braun will be joining, along with outstanding Taiwanese cellists including Wen-Sinn Yang, Pi-Chin Chien, Simon Thompson, Ching-Tzy Ko, Chu-Chuan Liu and Victor Coo. They will perform unforgettable concerts and share their expertise in masterclasses. Additionally, pianist Lina Yeh and jazz pianist Tseng-Yi Tseng will perform together with the cellists in the concerts. Furthermore, jazz cellist Stephan Braun and experienced violin restorer Tai-Ting Chung will conduct workshops. From classical to jazz, from solo performances to ensembles, the concerts, masterclasses, and workshops offer a diverse program, allowing the audience to experience the cello in its quintessence.

From a Day with "Cello in the Multiverse" to Best of Concert

The power of the cello's sound touches people's hearts worldwide. The TWICF brings the cello into focus in a unique way. The Taipei concerts will feature nine international cello masters. Throughout a whole day, audiences can enjoy the "Cello in the Multiverse" with solo performances, chamber music formations, and ensembles, experiencing both classical masterpieces and jazz improvisations! Additionally, in Kaohsiung, some highlights of this fulminant cello-day will be presented in a compressed format to celebrate the versatility and magnificent sound of the cello. In an open-air concert at Samsiu Garden, a centuries-old historical site in Yunlin, cellist Pi-Chin Chien and the Academy of Taiwan Strings will perform wonderful adaptations of traditional Taiwanese ballads, followed by a very special moment of resonance when children and amateurs who have little experience with the cello are invited to play along and revel in the beautiful sound of the cello together.

A gathering of world-class cellists – Fostering Taiwanese cellists through masterclasses

The invited master cellists are all leading figures on the international stage and possess rich educational experience. The TWICF Festival will conduct special masterclasses in Taipei and Kaohsiung, selecting a total of fifteen young cellists and students to receive individual instruction from the masters. This initiative aims to foster the development of Taiwanese cellists and support their future careers.

From its "Inner Beauty" to jazz improvisation: Fascinating workshops around the cello

To showcase the cello in all its diversity, the TWICF Festival will host special workshops. German jazz cellist Stephan Braun will hold a workshop on "Cello in Jazz" for the first time in Taiwan, allowing students and music lovers to experience this surprising aspect of the cello up close. Additionally, Taiwanese experienced violin restorer Tai-Ting Chung will lead a workshop on "The Making and History of the Cello," providing a deeper insight into the "inner beauty" and cultural history of the cello, offering participants the opportunity to learn about the cello from a different perspective.
